I am having a problem with my flash exposures lately. I have been taking
swing dance pictures at dark venues with good success using my 550EX.
For example : http://www.evrimgallery.com/Dance/amy_dancing_viscount.jpg

How does the ETTL work in manual focusing mode? I usually let it at the P
mode on the camera. ANy thoughts?

I never use the "P" mode. The camera tries to use f/11 or smaller resulting in dark
backgrounds. Even outdoors, the camera will darken the background.

When I am shooting with the flash outdoors, I set the camera to AV or TV. That way
the silly program in the camera will not try to give me small apertures and make the
background dark. For example, outdoors the "P" mode may give me 1/200 @f/16. That's
gonna almost eliminate all natural light unless it is a bright sunny day.

Shooting indoors at wedding receptions, I manually set my camera to 1/60 @ f/5.6. For
me that 99% of the time works out perfect. I'm not going to be able to light up the
whole room, but enough light from the flash hits the background to open it up a bit.
If I set the camera at 'P', it would probably give me settings like 1/60 @ f/11 or
f/16. That would give me the pitch black background like you experienced.

Experiment to find out what best work for you.

John
