Just to clarify - the camera was choosing apertures like f2.8 - 4.0. The
place is dark allright but I took pictures there before and never
experienced this. The attached well exposed picture is an example. I uused
400 speed film. Also, look at

This is the same venue as the one with the well exposed one. I manual
focused to get better focusing.  I was close enought to take most of those
with a 50-70mm  range. Esp. numbers 
73-74-69-66-67 are mysteryously underexposed.
