That's great advice, Tim. If you are using a single on-camera flash, 
you should get close to your subject and adjust the composition so 
that the subject takes up the majority of the frame. If there are 
multiple subjects, you need to change your position so that they are 
all an equal distance from the flash... otherwise what is too close 
will be blown out (overexposed) and what's too far away will be dark 
(underexposed). The single flash can only light subjects a certain 
distance from the camera properly. Expect the backgrounds to go dark 
if you're not properly exposing for ambient light, unless they are 
really close... and if they are, you'll probably get harsh shadows 
from the subject on it.
