The two lenses could have the same f-number but different t-numbers
... due to transmission

The strict definition of f-number may relate to axial "beams" of light
only.  Perhaps the prime lets more light through *in total* across the
whole area

The camera could be telling lies, or at least passing them on from the
lens.
Maybe the zoom is not really f2.8 after all ... the camera alone will
not tell you otherwise.




I've noticed too that certain lenses do appear to be "brighter"
aperture for aperture than others.  It makes them a pleasure to use
and gives the feeling of quality ...
