Yes, the 1 has a pattern with distinct zones for top and bottom. If my 
memory serves me right its one circular central zone, one circular ring 
around it and 4 zones for the rest of the 4 quadrants of the frame 
(excluding the extreme edges) It's the same as in the 100 AFAIK. The 50 
has the problem that it needs 3 of its 6 zones to be around its 3 AF 
sensors. The 1 and 100 have only one AF sensor, so having only 6 zones 
available is less of a problem there.
