I think you are right in assuming that things went wrong when
evaluative metering was linked to mulptiple focusing points - the
ideal distribution of measuring fields was sacrificed for the sake of
their corresponding to focusing points. I think it is only now when
number of focusing points and metering zones has been so much
multiplied that Canon's evaluative metering starts to score the goal
again.
