Having seen the press release for this lens last week, I knew when I checked
my e-mail there would be an unusual number of posts regarding this lens. I
think I.S. is an interesting addition to the 700mm F2.8 Lens but I for one
would much rather have seen a 70-200 F2 (or F1.8) DO lens. The extra stop
would help to isolate the subject. Most photographer who use this focal
length use it for sports and other action oriented photography, so with a
fast moving subject IS does not help very much. Almost seems like a solution
looking for a problem.
Granted with a 1.4x or 2x it is more versatile, but at 2x the $$ of the
100-400mm F4.5-5.6 IS lens a very expensive way to get a 140-400mm F5.6
lens.
Noting the way Canon reduced the resolving power of the 300mm F4L lens when
they made it with IS, it will be interesting to see if history repeats
itself. Hopefully they will produce a better lens as they did with the 300mm
F2.8 IS Lens. Only time will tell and I have more time than money these
days.
