This misconception here is that IS only helps at slow
shutter speeds. That's not true. When the first IS
lens came out one of the magazines did some tests, and
found visible improvement in sharpness at shutter
speeds all the way up to 1/500th second.
And with mode 2 IS, it will help with keeping the
subject sharp while panning.
And it will help markedly when the lens it used with a
2X TC, which is also quite common.
The 300 2.8 and 400 2.8 lenses are used a lot for
sports and action shooting too, but I don't here
anyone saying the IS is useless in those lenses.
