Don't want to discuss G-1 too much as it's not part of the EOS/EF line (like
the D30), but the only times I have trouble with my G-1 is close focusing
macro (and I mean less than 1.5 feet or about .5 meters) or when I'm taking
photos of my black Shih Tzu against a dark background in a dimly lit
situation. For macro, I usually put it in MF mode. No problems ever with
portraits unless it a shot with the subject to the side and I'm trying to
show them with the background (you know, snap shots of the kids standing to
the side with the Alamo in the background). Then I may have to focus then
recompose.
Cheers, JD

Subject: EOS D30 focussing (& G1 faults)
Dear fellas,
Do you have some 1-st hand experience with the D30 focussing
capabilities? I have just purchased (after a lot of research) a
Powershot G1 and it turned out to be a complete disaster - its
focussing algorithm (contrast-based one) isn't capable of properly
focussin at distances of 1.5-2.5 meters... Out of 4-5 shots from one
and the same place, with the model sitting still, I usually have only
one properly focussed... G1 is a complete disaster, and I think of
upgrading to D30, but want to know whether it experiences the same
problem or not.
On-line reviews won't help - I've read the whole review of G1 at
dpreview.com, and nowhere the focussing problem was mentioned!
Regards,
Gena
