Hi Howard,

Yeah, those "perfect -thing" phrases are very confusing. As you probably
already have read, the "automatic Fill-in compensation" goes together with
ambient light levels. In case of macro conditions, ambient light is not much
reaching the lens is in most cases not much, forcing the "automatic" fill-in
ratio to go up to 1:1, causing "overfill" :-)
When I want flash for fill-in in macro setups, I dial -1.5EV FEC. With the 380EX
that was seldom tricky (only when the present light levels where high) and I used
to get pretty consistent results.
In the 550EX that I've got now, the settings on the flash override those of the
camera, so when I dial -1.5 EV in the 550EX I'm sure what it's going to do.
Note that the automatic fill-in compensation is additive to whatever FEC you set
in the camera. So if your camera determines that for a given scene, a flash exp.
comp. of -1 is needed and you have -1.5FEC (**in-camera**) you'll end up with
-2.5 FEC.
Best regards,
Gerard.
PS:
For your further enlightment, I copy/paste here the auto fill -in table of the
EOS 1n, provided by Chris Valentine a couple of weeks ago. (BTW, Thanks Chris!!
:-)
I would expect the tables for other models to be quite similar.

Here it is again:
Here's the table of flash exposure compensation applied with the EOS1n
