That's definitely a good idea. Unfortunately, newer does not always
mean better and that is not limited to camera equipment.
If I remember correctly the 300/4 was a completely new design whereas
the 300/2.8IS etc were not. Further I think I heard that the 70-200IS
is also not a completely new design. So if my memory served me right
here there is hope that the new 70-200IS is equaly good as the old
version. Hopefully that is why it took so long to get this lens....
