>>After owning my Elan for a year now I think it's time to
purchase a
flash. I'm attending a photo workshop in September and one class
is
devoted to flash photography. My question is which flash will work
with
the Elan now that they quit making it. Will the new 420ex or 500
work?
What's the difference between the 2 and are they both compatible
with
the EOS 3? Please try to put this in laymen's term as I'm not to
knowledgeable about flashes.<<<
You will get more features with any of the XXX-EX flashes but
they are expensive for the amount of light they put out. I think
you might be better off with a Sunpak or Vivitar dedicated flash
for your class. I doubt they would be getting into the FP prefire
and high speed synch stuff- probably just TTL which any dedicated
flash will give you. You'll spend 40-50 dollars, then if you want
to upgrade you will only take a small hit on it when you move up.
I think you (and the class, for that matter) would get much
more out of concentrating on remote flash, flash placement, etc.,
rather than just sticking the flash on the camera and forgetting
it.
WARNING! NOBODY knows this! "If you get a third party
dedicated flash it will advertise a super power AF assist light.
It will *only* work on your Elan if you set the focus point,
manually, to center spot."
You're welcome <g>.
