The way I read this is that you are assuming that once the class is
finished he will pitch everything and buy a kayak or something.

What if.....  He decides to keep the Elan II and the 380-EX and actually
learn how to use the combo?

I agree with Peter.  Buy a 380-EX or a 420-EX and be ready to move
upward and onward in EOS photography.
