You will get more features with any of the XXX-EX flashes but
they are expensive for the amount of light they put out. I think
you might be better off with a Sunpak or Vivitar dedicated flash
for your class. I doubt they would be getting into the FP prefire
and high speed synch stuff- probably just TTL which any dedicated
flash will give you. You'll spend 40-50 dollars, then if you want
to upgrade you will only take a small hit on it when you move up.
I think you (and the class, for that matter) would get much
more out of concentrating on remote flash, flash placement, etc.,
rather than just sticking the flash on the camera and forgetting
it.<<

___I disagree. You can find a cheap 380EX on ebay for about
$US125-160.
New they run about $170. Output is comparable to the Sunpak's and
Vivitars. THe actual output may be 1/2 stop less, but you gain
E-TTL,
High Speed Sync and all the feature your camera support. Its a
very
good flash unit for the price.

That is kind of my point; the EX flashes are wonderful for EOS
cameras, many new and great features- but in the fellow's class, I
suspect they will be teaching the basics of flash and not getting
into EOS specific features and uses. In fact, some of the things
it will do will be countering what most classes on flash use would
teach!
