I think most people on the Elan 7E Mailing List set CF7 to
disable the flickering AF-assist (CF7=1 or CF7=2 if using
a 420EX or 550EX).
This problem is not isolated to the Elan 7E, but also the
D30. Michael Reichmann recommends using the ST-E2, see:
