That pretty much cinches my decision not to buy a 7E.  The point is that I
want a/f assist, because it is necessary in low light, especially with a
slower lens.  Disabling it will make things even worse, if less annoying to
people in line of sight of the flickering light.  I had hoped that the new
model would be even more sensitive in low light than the old, but apparently
it is less sensitive -- e.v. 1-18 vs. 0-18 with the IIe.  I would really
like to have a completely separate a/f assist feature that I can turn on and
off with an external switch, completely independent of the flash. To be
sure, it should also be able, manually, to engage the flash too, but only
when I say so.  As it is what you can do is too limited, and to do it
requires fumbling with custom functions and the like, in low light, while
you are trying to take a picture.  No thanks.
