I was referring to a/f assist at all. The EOS 3 is more of a professional
camera, and these are built mostly on the assumption that the pro will use
an add-on flash when he needs flash (although the Maxxum 9 does have a built
in flash). For me, a casual photographer with a darkroom, the built-in
flash is an important feature for when I need it and don't have the rest of
my kit available. That is one reason, along with the cost, size, weight, and
noise, that I didn't even consider an EOS 3. I don't know how good the 3 is
focusing in low light without a/f assist, or how bright the focusing screen
is so that you can use m/f easily, especially with those USM ring motor
lenses. But really, it is too much camera for me. What I really would like
to see is a reincarnated A2, with infrared a/f assist, spot meter, and a PCS
terminal -- and, one hopes, some of the improvements in manual and automatic
focus control I have been suggesting.

The reason I complain about the Elan 7 is that I was really looking forward
to it and was excited about some of its new features -- including better
a/f, even more silent operation, etc. In the months before it came out,
many people speculated hopefully that it would add spot metering over the
II, but that didn't happen. OK, that was not so bad, but this retrograde a/f
assist thing was an unexpected piece of negative news.
