To deviate just a little from the AF thread; one of the reasons Canon, and
Nikon too, chose not to have a built-in flash on their pro bodies--1 series
and EOS 3--is to enhance the cameras weather-proofing.
A while back I sold an A2e to a guy who was using his A2 to shoot a football
game. He got caught in a sudden downpour, a real gully-washer according to
him, and the rain that entered the camera via the top deck flash housing
fried the camera's electronics. He told me that Canon quoted him a repair
cost that was so high, it was more economically prudent just to get a new
camera...or one like mine, used but in excellent condition. As an aside, I
missed the A2e so much I replaced it with an EOS 5...which I don't use in
heavy rain BTW.
Superior weather proofing is part of the reason I use the 1v as it's touted
to be the best sealed of any camera and where I live, some years the only
way to tell the difference between summer and winter is the temperature of
the rain. Also AF in low-light without an AF assist light built in to the
body has not been an issue for me. It seems to do very well, and of course
when ambient light gets to the point of being low enough to impact picture
quality, or the ability to take one at all, I just put the flash on. And,
as I am religious about using a lens hood, I doubt if a built-in AF assist
light would project effectively anyway.
So I guess we all have our different priorities, shooting styles and related
equipment preferences--that's what makes EOS stuff so neat though, it offers
something for just about everyone.
