I am thinking of buying a 1.4X or 2X extender for my 100-400 IS. It will
be used with a A2 body. My understanding is the 1.4X will cost me one
stop, my max aperture would go from f/4.5 to f/5.6 and the 2X would cost me
2 stops, f/4.5 to f/8? Is this right? And I understand that with my A2 I
would not have AF. How do they effect metering? How about maintaining the
lens IS function? Anything else I should know about these to help me
decide?

Get the 1.4x which will lose one stop and not that much loss in image
quality.
In particular, I would recomment the Tamron SP PRO 1.4x which is also beige
like the Canon L lenses and very very sharp.
Unless you are a person who only wants the Canon name, you can save about
$150 and the only one who will know the difference is you and your wallet.
All functions with the Tamron SP PRO 1.4x are the same as with the much more
expensive Canon EF 1.4x.
