it on a zoom lens and I have read John Shawn and others state that
zoom+extension = hard-to-use

As you mentioned, opinions vary!

I find extension tubes pretty handy with a zoom lens. You can use the zoom
to change the magnification ratio.
When using a good quality fixed lens the image degration is negligible.
Of course image degration is a bigger concern with zoom lenses+extension
tubes vs. fixed lens+extensions, and one should judge his needs and
requirements and make the desicion based upon those factors.

My advice: if you can get the extension tubes at a good price, grab them.
You can't go much wrong and you can always sell them (almost?) at the same
price you paid if you don't like them.

Best Regards, Olli
