Hi Jim, I use the Canon 500D lens with 28-135 and 200 and 100-400 lenses. There is a reason why the 500D is recommended for long lenses. By itself, the EF 28-70 f/2.8 L can produce a maximum magnification of 0.18x at 0.5m Using the Javascript Lens Calculator, this means that the effective focal lenght is 60mm. http://members.home.net/jul.loke/ Slapping the 500D in front of this lens will allow a maximum magnification of 0.33x at 0.33m. In other words, about the same magnification as an EF 28-90 by itself! Third party alternatives in 77mm size? Perhaps only Cokin? http://www.geocities.com/cokinfiltersystem/close_up.htm http://www.angelfire.com/ca/erker/closeups.html Suggestions (other than the EF 100 USM Macro?): How about Kenko extension tubes (12mm, 20mm, 36mm)?
