G'day Tim,

As you pointed out, when just using extension on the wide end of
the 28-70L, working distance can be quite limited.

But how about a teleconverter + extension and using the long
end of the 28-70L? This should give you more magnification while
preserving working distance.

According to the Lens Calculator
 http://members.home.net/jul.loke
28-70L + 20mm extension + 2xTC gives 1:1 with
17.5cm working distance
