I sent an email to Canon Technical Support (from their website) about this 
issue about a year ago and they responded that NiMHs were fine in the 
420ez, the 540ez and the 550ex. (the only three I asked about). I too have 
been using them without problem. I use the Everyready NiMHs that you can 
purchase in the USA at Best Buy.
