The A2 with the 540 EZ uses A-ttl flash system. I find this approach better
than TTL and sometimes better than E-ttl because with faster film, and closer
subjects, the a-ttl programming will pick a smaller aperature, which
increases depth of field. The picture may have more of a flash look than
programming that maximumizes the ambient light effect, but overall sharpness
is improved. However, my experiece with e-ttl is limited to an Elan II and a
lower model e-ttl flash. Newer systems may have different adjustments. I wish
the flash systems provided an option: select largest possible aperature or
smallest within the capability of the conditions and flash. This would
provide auto control but vary greatly the performance of the flash and its
pics.
