I looked at the photo.net site and found one reference to grinding noises.
There was
one other about a five year old 100 macro with AF drive that broke. What
am I missing?

I did a quick google search, got 200 hits, looked at the headers quickly. I
did find one complaint that I remembered, one of two folks who complained
that the AF/MF switch on their EF 100 f/2.8 macro broke, those complaints
from 1998. Those are the only complaints that I remember about this lens in
all the years I've been reading this newsgroups, rec.photo.equipment.35mm
and photo.net. So I'm with Bob on this. And those two complaints wouldn't
have prevented me from buying this lens if I needed it.
