I own both. You really can't use the 180mm without a tripod. The only
time I use the 180mm macro is when I'm taking butterfly shots.  With
nearly everything else, I use the 100mm, including those of my newborn.
With the ways babies move, the 100mm macro would be a better, I think,
with the ability to handhold the shots.

That being said, I used my 28-135mm lens for the shot you described: a
series of baby hands in the palm of the mother, and baby feet being held
by the adult hand.  The issue for me wasn't the ability to focus so
closely -- I needed a little wider shot in order to show the adult hand
and show the contrast in sizes anyway -- it was having enough
versatility to crop the shot in the camera because the baby tends to
move so much. I went with the zoom rather than a fixed lens.
