I have the Mk II lens, and it does the same thing.  It's not supposed to
make that noise or have that feel in manual focus mode, though--it's the
same feeling as when you try to turn the focus ring when it's in AF mode.  I
find that I have to flip the AF-MF switch back and forth several times to
get it to correctly engage MF mode; then, it's perfectly smooth (and quiet).
Sometimes, I have to AF the lens on something before it works in manual
focus mode, almost like some gears need to be realigned.

I don't know if this damages the lens, but I'm sure it can't be good...
