Julian,

The reason that the D30 can't use TTL is simply because they didn't put
a TTL sensor it it, that is, the sensor that reads the light bouncing
off the film plane/digital sensor. *Why* they failed to put this in, I
don't know, whether it was technical or to keep costs down or to force
the purchase of E-TTL equipment I have no idea.

But it is possible to read light bouncing off the digital sensor. I
believe the 1D has regular TTL available reading off the sensor as do
the other cameras you mention.

If you are using the older flashes simply as slaves set at a manual
power setting they should work, but not if you want control over
exposure via TTL. I don't think it would work with the dedicated cords
in TTL because the older equipment doesn't emit the E-TTL preflash so it
wouldn't be able to meter the scene before the exposure, though I will
defer to the judgement of anyone with more experience working with
canon's flashes off camera.
