I dont think I would judge the whether it working or not by what's in the 
viewfinder.  I used to own this lens and the 300/4 IS, and I rarely noticed 
any movement in the viewfinder.  What happens when you shoot with slow 
shutter speed and hand held?  Do you get decent images?
