I bought a G1for just about the same purpose you propose.  These issues
may not apply to the G2, but.... I'm somewhat dissappointed with it.  
* the zoom is very slow and unresponsive
* terrible shutter lag
* it has no manual mode meter
* it is not very compatible with the EX flash system
* you can't zoom in on a raw image to check focus
* focusing is hit-or-miss; it always focuses on the highest-contrast area
on the scene, not necessarily the center
* it suffers from color "blooming"
...but it does produce nice images.  I just expected more in a high-end
camera.
