Just to clarify, you can use teleconverters with the 100-400, but you
lose autofocus and sharpness.  I used it with the 2x this weekend,
handheld, and got good (but not sharp) results.  Of course, a wedding
photographer won't be using 800mm.  

I always felt that the push-pull zoom was the perfect design for this
lens.  Otherwise, it would be impossible to zoom and manually focus at
the same time.  My review of the 100-400:

For a wedding photographer, I would think the 70-200 IS lens would be
the best choice.  It costs more, but it gives you both the faster
aperture and the image stabilization.
