This is not 100% acurate. You get firmware updates which indeed improve
image quality.

I also had this experience. When I compare my EOS 600 shots taken
with my Tamron 20-200 with the shots taken with my EF 135mm/2.0L,
I see that the money saved an a cheap lens is wasted on bad pictures.
