Gary, the button unscrews by turning the body of the VRB. The red dot on the VRB should line up with the red dot on the grip. The button rides within the body, on springs, contacting the grip points when pressed - you shouldn't have to force it. Its posible that the button was mounted incorrectly, resulting in the inability to release the shutter. BTW, a functional Vertical Release Button can fetch up to $100 at auction!
