Ah, yes. You've perceived one of a handful of errors that crept in

Still, I know how tenderly a camera lover's heart beats, and how
bruised and hurt one can feel when one's favourite camera is so
savagely assailed.

I don't know where you get these assumptions. I shoot QTVR panoramas
regularly using an Elan (100), which also has an offset tripod
socket. My comments match my experience.
