Hi All, I don't think that there is an ideal detector size based on sensor dimensions. It would depend on the compromise that makes up detector performance (fill rate, noise etc.), detector/pixel size, array size, cost and camera format. For a telescope of a given focal length and aperture you can calculate the optimum array dimensions and element size to capture a maximum resolution image given the limits of the atmosphere and the apparent minimum point size of a star, Nyquist etc. the size of the array is secondary in that it only limits the field of view, not the resolution of the system.
