There is a little tab that is right in the middle at the front of the lens mount opening. Just pull it forward and a little holder will drop down, but won't hit the mirror. There is a little tab on the screen that you can grab with a pair of tweezers.
As far as it being a bad thing to do...if you don't actually have to touch the screen to get the gunk off (like if it is dust or something that can be blown off with a puff of air) you are fine, but if it is something you think you will need to "scrub" off, forget it, the screen will scratch. New screens are only $30 and you can switch it for an easier to manual focus grid screen. As far as taking it out and putting it back in, it is easy to do, but you might get dust on it and have to take it out and blow it off again once or twice.
