Howard,
Let me try and make this simple.
If you have a ST-E2 you can use either a 420 or 550 as a slave.
If you have a 420EX you need a 550 as a master since the 420
can only be a slave.
If you have 2 550s they serve as either but
you sill need something like an off camera cord to move the 550
away from the lens axis.
I have a ST-E2 and 2 550s for this reason. I can position them
anywhere and use the ST-E2 to trigger them. At the time the 420EXs
were not on the market. If they were I may have opted for 2 420s
to save some $$$. THe exception would be the added power of the
550 which can help with slower films and also in poorly lit
situtations.
