The bars are not good indicators, too often by the time the first bar
disappears you have only a few shots left, at least that is with my
experience.

I've found if you 1/2 press the shutter to activate the AF motor (which also
activates the IS with IS lenses) while pressing the battery check button
will generate a representative load while the battery is being tested.  As
we all know a "no load" test means next to nothing, while the test while the
battery is under nominal load is far more representative.
