I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or what. For quite some time I've
used an EOS A2 and a 540EZ flash with great results. I recently got a D30
and a 550EX and can't seem to get them working right together. When I use
the flash I estimate that I get around 40% correct exposure, 10%
overexposed, and 50% underexposed (not so terribly underexposed that I can't
fix the photos in Photoshop though, maybe 1/2 - 2/3 stop?). And no, it isn't
flash recycle. If I take the same shot twice in a row it will usually be the
second one that is correctly exposed. I've tried with the flash on the
camera and on a bracket with the off camera cord. I've tried straight flash
and with a Lumiquest softbox.

Last night I was shooting a comedian's performance in a local club and for
the heck of it decided to try using just the built-in flash on the D30. Wow!
90% of the shots were perfectly exposed. The only problem shots were those
with large white areas in them (i.e., performer holding up a white t-shirt).

The only other thing I did was to change the exposure meter mode from
evaluative to partial. Haven't had a chance to experiment with the 550 this
way. Might that play into this problem?

Has anyone here had any experience with the D30 and the 550EX?
