Oddly with CF10 disabled and using only the center focusing spot, I get
perfect exposures with the D30 and 550 even in the dark (just as you would
with the A2 and 540 combination).
Prior to that change, my experiences were much like yours - two shots in a
row with one stop difference in exposure.
