Hi Gary,
I suggest you disconnect your BP-E1 when it's not in use. My EOS3 has a
significant drain when "off", and without doing any shooting can drain a 2CR5 in
a week or two. However, I did a test and got more than the equivalent of 50 36
expos. films from a fresh 2CR5 - but the test duration was only about an hour or
two! When queried last year, Canon UK advised that EOS3 current drains of a few
mA when "off" are normal - I'm not so sure. Even if I don't use my EOS3 for a
few weeks (when I've removed the 2CR5) after I re-insert the battery, it
correctly remembers how many frames and what CFs are set etc. This info I
believe is held in the memory held up by the internal cell.

I also have a 28-135 IS and haven't noticed any heavy drain when using it.
