My 100-400 with 500D has the advantage of larger working distance, and also
offers the Image stabilizer, which old timers on this list will remember is
one of my favourite combinations.

My EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro has greater magnification, and a continuous
range of focussing from 1:1 to infinity.
