As far as I know scratches in the front lens not really influence the
picture because they are so out of focus that they are invisible on the
picture. A lot of small cratches, howewer, can cause image softening making
the light more diffuse. It is said that one big scratch is better than
several small. But I may be wrong, may consumer lenses not pre-scratched.
Maybe the pro ones :).
