There is a quirk in the A2's (and EOS 5's) metering system because of the
special "bright" focussing screen used in those cameras. When using the A2 with
either converter, and lenses 300mm or longer, you need to apply some correction
to the reading the camera gives you. (Remember, the body displays the correct
effective aperture when using Canon extenders.) If you use an incident meter,
the camera meter has nothing to do with it, and no correction is needed. Bob
Atkins has a much more precise explanation than this, and this link should get
you there:

I would quibble with one point he makes. He states that "The EOS 5/A2/A2E
focusing screens are optimized for brightness. As a result, they pass
disproportionately more light to the metering system". If more light is going
to the screen, it stands to reason that less light is going to the meter. This
would explain the negative correction required to obtain the correct exposure on
the film. I think I see this effect with even the 200/2.8 and EF2X. It reads a
bit lower than I would expect. I just trust my gut instinct, and the exposed
chromes are usually just fine.
