doesn't seem so strange, the metering is off the focusing screen, and you 
have a lens focusing light on it from the front, and the back. Normally 
this is blocked by your head (if the camera is at your eye).

I use manual when shooting on a tripod (right royal pain in the you know 
where with my 630!)
