Russell, I own both as well as a 550EX and I would say try and find a used 540EZ. It's build quality is excellent compared to the Sigma. If you plan on upgrading bodies down the road the 540 will do E-TTL so that may put the Sigma at an advantage. The Sigma isn't a bad flash at all but the Canon is built like a tank and the Sigma feels less solid.
