Chris, when I used the term "robust" in my comments on the 28-135, I
wasn't really talking about the construction. It seems plenty solid to
me, though certainly not as solid as my old pentax gear or the old Canon
gear (MF stuff).
yes, where the lenses certainly outlast the cameras ;-)

I was commenting on the electrical stuff inside, the
AF and IS systems. Actually we are expecting **more** like IS and AF
and then complaining when these newly complicated systems fail us.

actually, its not so much the IS motors, and USM motors (as I'm of the belief that they're reasonably robust) its more the cams and mechanical operation in the zooms

I've got a 28-105 here that is stuck, it will only zoom out if pointed down, and then it zooms fine. My feeling looking at the movement, is there is too much mechanical 'dis' advantage in the mechaism. In contrast, my 35-70 has always been slick and smooth in operation.

of course I'm dealing with statisticaly low numbers, hence seeking the input from other group members :-)

  If
you want truly robust gear that you never have to worry about a lens
"failing to operate", then you need to go with mechanical cameras(which
do sometimes fail to operate)

personally I'm very happy with the EOS bodies, I think that the secret is in reducing moving parts, and simplifying operation. Definately the EOS bodies have done this compared to their older mechanical brothers (full of gogs, gears, wires under tension...)

 and their incredibly robust lenses.
However, I need the systems that introduce complexity and fragility, so
I guess I will trade robustness for them.
fair enough, but I'm a landscape shooter and don't really want or desire IS (if I was a sports shooter, that would be a different matter)

Personally I've got the robustness I need in the lens lineup, but only including 2 lenses (which I use a lot) that are not available anymore (the EF50 1.8 MkI and the 35-70 f3.5-4.5 Mk1.)
