Hi NK Guy,

It's been a while since I've used a 430EZ but the preflash on the 430EZ is
red as far as I recall.  I'm pretty sure that it's documented as such in the
Speedlight 540EZ Magic Lantern guide too.  I don't recall there being a
preflash when the head is not used in the direct mode.  Of course this is
fuzzy as I only had one for a very short period a very long time ago.

Regarding preflash, I always communicate with my subjects in all situations
and tell them about the red preflash and what to expect.  I don't tell
people that just happen into a frame for reportage style shooting, generally
they are not paying attention to my flash and it makes no difference in how
they appear on film.

I'm with you on A-TTL vs. TTL, they both can produce basically the same
results.  I use TTL mode most of the time as I prefer to use a Lumiquest Big
Bounce, Ultra-Soft or 80/20 on the 540EZ.
