If you put the flash (not camera body) into M mode it stays in that mode. If you turn the flash unit off and turn it back on it's still in M. The same applies to the low-power mode it goes into - when it wakes up it's still in M.

I don't like ANY preflash myself, so I'd want to stay in manual mode.
I assume manual mode means TTL all the time?
No, actually. I'm afraid you're confusing camera body M mode and flash M mode.

When the camera body is in manual (M) metering, the 430EZ will use TTL metering. If you set the *flash unit* to M mode then you have to specify the flash output yourself manually and use a flash meter - there is no TTL metering of any kind.

You use the camera body M mode to set manual ambient light metering and the flash body M mode to set manual flash metering.

I bought the 430EZ since it was the best cheap discontinued flash I could find at the time. I now wish I'd bought the 540EZ instead, simply because the 540EZ doesn't use A-TTL in Av and Tv modes and thus doesn't fire white light when you meter in those modes.
