The EOS-1Ds is the first digital SLR with an image sensor the same size as a 35mm negative. If the sensor is smaller, the outside edges of the image coming in through the lens are cut off. This is known as the "multiplier". The D30 and D60 have a 1.6 multiplier. The EOS-1D has a 1.3 multiplier. This means that if you spent $1800 to buy a 14mm f2.8 for your EOS-3, it would effectively be an 18mm lens on an EOS-1D or 22.5mm on a D60.
If you need the money from your EOS-3 to buy the digital body, get a cheap Rebel 2000 just to use with the expensive super wideangle lens.
